1917 NIEUPORT 28C.1 (Representation)

Douglas Campbell, the first American–trained pilot to become an ace, flew a French Nieuport 28C.1. The 28C.1 was one of the most handsome of World War I fighters. Cursed by its unreliable Gnome Monosoupape rotary engine, it also had the nasty habit of shedding its top wing covering in vigorous maneuvers. In spite of this, aces Rickenbacker and Lufbery had victories flying 28C.1s.

Specifications: span 26 ft. 9 in.; length 21 ft. 0 in.; takeoff weight 1,625 lbs.; engine 160 hp. Gnome Monosoupape nine-cylinder air-cooled rotary (original); 160 hp. Lycoming air-cooled flat four (representation); maximum speed 128 mph. Armament one Vickers .303 cal. machine gun.

Accession no. 1992G38.
