In 1927, inspired by Lindberghs flight, 16 year-old William F. Milliken began designing an airplane which evolved into a parasol monoplane with a motorcycle engine. Finally, in 1933, Milliken took the M-1 to Old Orchard Beach for tests. It flew, but landing took three attempts ending when the M-1 flipped over on its back. Encouraged by this flight, he went on to a long aeronautical and automotive career. Specifications: span 25 ft.; length 16 ft. 10 in.; engine 27 hp. Heath-Henderson water-cooled in-line four-cylinders (modified Henderson motorcycle engine). Accession no. 1978G03. |
