This Otto engine, manufactured in Philadelphia, powered a wood working shop on Cumberland Island, Georgia. Nicholas A. Otto produced the first successful gasoline-powered internal-combustion four-cycle engine in 1876. It was based on a principle defined by Beau De Rochas in 1862. That first engine was the ancestor of hundreds of millions of automobile, marine, and aircraft engines. Specifications: bore 8.5 in., stroke 14 in., 21 hp. at 240 rpm. Accession no. 1992G44 |
