The A-3 was Charles R. Lawrance's first aircraft engine. Intended for use in the Shinnecock lightplane, this 28-hp engine was used in the Breese Penguin, a non-flying pre-flight World War I trainer. With both pistons on the same crank throw, the A-3 vibrated fiercely. However, Army and Navy interest in his engines enabled Lawrance to experiment and design the 9-cylinder J-1 radial which led to the famous J-5 Wright Whirlwind. Specifications: Model A-3; two-cylinder horizontally opposed, air-cooled; 28 hp. at 1400 rpm. Accession no. 1992G46 |
