In 1885 Karl Benz designed and built the first vehicle intended from the ground up to be powered by an internal combustion gasoline engine. Versions of this Tri-Car were produced for a number of years in several variations. It has a number of features still found in automobiles today; water-cooled engine, electric ignition, mechanically operated inlet valves and differential gear rear end. Specifications: engine horizontal,four-cycle, single-cylinder, water-cooled; bore 116 mm., stroke 160 mm.,displacement 1600 cc., 3/4 hp. Accession no. 1991P01. |
