By 1892 the Eadie Manufacturing Co. was producing bicycles under the name "Enfield"; "Royal" and the famous slogan "Made Like a Gun" and the field gun logo were added shortly afterward. These uses result from the company's association with the government arsenal at Enfield, manufacturing the famous Enfield rifles. Royal Enfield produced a variety of machines, with the single-cylinder middleweights, which catered to limited budgets, being the most successful. Enfield helped pioneer the chain drive and dry sump lubrication in the motorcycle line. One visionary idea was the footshift lever for gear changes. Specifications: Engineair-cooled single-cylinder; two-stroke; bore 64 mm., stroke 70 mm. Displacement225 cc. Power Rating2.25 hp. Accession no. 1985G02. |
