George N. Pierce, of Pierce-Arrow automobile fame, began producing bicycles in 1896. This racing model utilizes a skip-tooth front sprocket and a direct drive (non free-wheeling) rear hub. This configuration is still used in modern sprint and track racing bicycles. The low handlebars help the rider maintain a more aerodynamic position and helped increase the speed of the rider by further isolating the power of the upper legs. Retention straps decreased the chances of having a foot slip off the pedals during maximum effort. The Museum's example remains in unrestored condition, with original saddle, tires and chain.
