Produced in Britain from 1906 to 1925, and from 1920 to 1926 in the U.S., the Silver Ghost was acclaimed "The Best Car in the World." Originally owned by Alice Longfellow, the poets daughter, this car was acquired by Alan Bemis, teller of Maine tales, who used it to haul weather observation equipment up Mt. Washington during the 1930s. Severely damaged in the 1938 hurricane, it was restored to its present condition by Bemis who then presented it to the Museum. Specifications: 40/50 horsepower Silver Ghost; engine six-cylinder, in-line, water-cooled; bore 4-1/2 in., stroke 4-3/4 in., displacement 7428 cc. Accession no. 1989G03.
