1904 PIERCE STANHOPE
1904 Pierce Stanhope

In 1901 George N. Pierce, maker of bicycles and bird cages, built the first Pierce motor vehicle — the Motorette — powered by a 2.5 hp. de Dion engine. By 1904 Pierce was using an engine of their own design. But the single-cylinder powered Stanhope was at the end of its run. The front jump seats were intended for occasional use only. The market was demanding a proper four seater. In October 1903, a Stanhope won its class in the New York-Pittsburgh test run.

Specifications: Stanhope 2P; engine single-cylinder, air-cooled, 8 hp. Price new $1,200.

Accession no. 1997L04.
