Ransom Eli Olds, who gave his name to Oldsmobile, produced the Curved Dash model in 1901. It was the first mass- produced motor vehicle in history, progressing from 425 in 1901, to 2,500 in 1902, 4,000 in 1903, and 5,508 in 1904. The Curved Dash was light and dependable. In 1903 one was driven from San Francisco to New York, Boston and Portland, Maine by Lester Whitman and Eugene Hammond. Specifications: Model R, two-passenger runabout; engine four-cycle, single-cylinder, water-cooled, spark ignition; bore 4.5 in., stroke 6 in., displacement 95 cu. in., 4.5 hp.
