Cardboard Contraptions Contest at Owls Head
The Owls Head Transportation Museum has added its second annual Cardboard Contraption Contest to the list of activities at its Kite, Bikes & Trikes Family Festival, Saturday April 23.
This competition will be part artistic ability, part public spectacle and all fun, says Owls Head Education Director and contest coordinator, Ethan Yankura.
The contest is open to teams of up to four people of any age. While family participation is encouraged, contraptioneers need not be related. Due to limited supplies, registration is required, but as many teams will be accommodated as possible.
The competition will begin at 10 am. Teams will be provided a supply of cardboard, a roll of tape and up to three hours to create some sort of vehicle. Teams are encouraged to bring paint and markers to decorate their creations Plans and templates are allowed as long as they are not part of the finished vehicle. Cardboard and tape are the only construction materials permitted. While a large supply of cardboard will be available, participants will be allowed to bring their own cardboard, subject to inspection by Museum Officialsand Cardboard Contraption Association guidelines.
Contraption judging will take place at 1 pm.
The Owls Head Kites, Bikes & Trikes Family Festival is held annually on the Saturday following Aprils school vacation week. This year will feature kite demonstrations by members of the Noreaster Kite Club, a bike parade, Model T rides and more. Adult admission is $10. Children under 18 are admitted free.
